Never before have I seen parental neglect so overwhelmingly widespread, than here in Ukraine. There is something about studying these children that really levels you as a human. With children, at these ages, there are no schemes, they do not want your money, your advice, or your toys. Most of them do not have the capacity to see missionary students as anything other than a temporary source of love. They desire affection. And what connects any of us, to any of them, is that we all have a longing for affection, either from our mother, father, spouse, our children, or our friends. To some extent, we all would like a little bit more love. Empathy is simple here, where there is no shortage of emptiness.

They say that abandonment is a wound that never heals. I say only that an abandoned child never forgets.
